How Does Dye Sublimation Printing Work?

The process usually involves four main stages:
The Artwork Is Prepared
The design is created using professional design software and prepared in the correct dimensions, colour format and resolution.

The Design Is Printed
The artwork is printed onto specialist sublimation transfer paper using dye sublimation inks.
The colours may appear duller on the transfer paper. Their full brightness develops during the heat-transfer process.
Heat and Pressure Are Applied
The transfer paper is placed against the polyester fabric. The materials are then passed through a heat press or calendar press.
The heat changes the solid ink into a gas. The gaseous ink penetrates the fabric fibres and bonds with the polyester.
The Fabric Is Finished
Once the fabric cools, the ink becomes permanently embedded in the material.
The printed fabric can then be cut, stitched and manufactured into a gazebo canopy, flag, tablecloth, banner wall or other display product.

Sublimation describes a process in which a substance changes directly from a solid into a gas without first passing through a liquid stage.
